If you're here you are a concerned parent. Your child has asked you for GMod (Garry's Mod). You have questions. Below I will try to answer them.

Contents

Is GMod played online?

Partly as you are able to play singeplayer. The singleplayer is no different from the multiplayer, except for less lag and no other players.

Is it violent?

There are guns, and people shooting each other.. and blood from being shot. But that's not the main part of the game. That's there if you want to do it. Think of it as a toybox. There's lego, there's dolls, there's toy guns. It's up to the player to decide what they want to do.

Why did you add guns?

As Garry's Mod is a Mod, it inherits all the traits of the game it modifies. The game I choose for this was Half-Life 2; A storyline game based around shooting and surviving. Garry's Mod inherits all the guns, the alien creatures you shoot at and the evil policemen that shoot at you.

Is there sex?

No. It's not part of the game. But there are dolls that you can put together to make them look like they're having sex, if you so wish. Just like you can rub together two Barbie dolls to make them look like they're having sex.

Is there swearing?

No. Not in the game itself. When you're playing online it's just like a chat room - so the other people could swear - and to be honest - it's not uncommon.

This is staring to sound really adult orientated

I'm sorry, it really isn't. I'm just trying to be as honest as I can to you so you can make the right decisions. It's only as 'adult' as your childs mind is. Just like giving them a pen and paper and asking them to draw.

What is Steam?

Think of Steam like iTunes for PC Games. You can buy games on it but you don't get a physical box, the games are automatically downloaded. They then show on the Steam games list. Steam is operated by Valve. Valve have been making PC games for over 10 years.

The advantage with Steam is that the license you are entitled to when you buy a game is stored by Steam. If your computer stops working and you buy another one, you won't loose the license, meaning you can just redownload the game and start playing again!

How do I pay?

You are able to buy Garry's Mod with the following methods: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB, PayPal, ClickandBuy.

Is it secure to shop through Steam Store?

Yes. The entire purchase process is carried through an secure connection.

Quoted from Steam Store: "When you submit your payment information your data is protected by Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology certified by a digital certificate."

Where do I buy?

Your child should be able to show you how to buy via Steam. If not - you need to get their username and go to http://store.steampowered.com/app/4000/. Click Add to cart. When you go to pay you should be able to buy it as a gift. Put your child's username as the recipient. It will send them an email and the game will be available for them to install on Steam.

I need another game to buy it?

Garry's Mod is a Mod. A Mod is a game that modifies another game. Because it modifies another game - it needs that game to exist. If you don't already have one of those games your best bet is to buy one of the package deals (GMod + Team Fortress 2). Alternatively there's a list of games that you can use GMod with here: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?category2=16. Add one of those to your cart when you buy GMod. Portal is recommended as it has the least violence, and is a great puzzle game as well.
