Tool | Back |
Type: | Constraint tool |
Primary fire: | Creates an axis joint. |
Secondary fire: | No action |
Notes: | Can be used to create custom wheels, robotic arms, rotating machinery and such. |
Brief
The Axis tool does just as its name suggests; it creates an axis between two props. They are allowed to spin freely on the axis created and friction may be adjusted during the process.
Instructions
- Fire at any point on any object. A "ghost guide" will appear to show you where the object will be placed.
- Fire at any point on any other object. The first object snaps to the position of the second object, filling in the "ghost guide".
The two objects will now rotate axially around the point they are joined at, as if an axis of rotation had been stuck through it.
Variables
- Force Limit
- The amount of force (in pounds) that it takes to break the axis joint.
- Torque Limit
- This sets how resistant the rotation engine should be.
- Friction
- If greater than zero, friction will be added to the axis joint, so that if it is set spinning, it will eventually slow down and stop. Higher numbers mean more friction.
- No collide
- If selected, the two objects will pass freely through each other. This is appropriate for most cases, since the objects would otherwise scrape against each other and cause problems.
Useful hints
- The Axis constraint is one of the more used and useful constraints in Garry's Mod. And for a good reason as well.
- Besides its obvious application for Wheels, it can also function well as a hinge in certain situations. However, the obvious need for a flat surface can limit its function in this way.
- The Axis constraint is weak, and will not work well for extremely heavy objects. If the axis constraint is too weak try using two normal ballsocket welds to hinge the object.
