Cleaning Contraptions (cont.)

I do hope there's more to it.. because right now all you've done is make it harder to find half of the categories by hiding them on another page.  --Crazy Quebecer 20:16, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Feel free to do what you please with it if your going to be like that...
I rolled it back but it's not because it wasn't good, it was completely breaking the wiki's layout! Have a look at your other contraption page.
Here's what I'm thinking of doing, first reclassify them (only 1 page for vehicles) and and move the other stuff to subcategories, then create more subcategories to make stuff easier to find. Also a partial/complete overhaul of contraption templates so that they can be made collapsible and sortable. They would be sorted by name, maybe author and required addons. Not sure. This would make pages easier to browse while not removing a bit of content (except some really really awful ones).--Crazy Quebecer 22:04, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
I like the idea of a collapsible template a lot. It would make it much more organized. However there's still the issues of mingebag contraptions (see: Traps category) and 2-second crap that needs to be weeded. So who wants to volunteer for the dirty job of weeding them out? :P --Kody 21:43, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
It seems this project has come to a bit of a standstill...Any idea on where we want to go from here? At the very least I think we should delete the useless contraptions. I just don't want new Gmodders joining and looking to this wiki (as I did) and seeing all of these minging contraptions (as I did NOT :P). --Kody 14:59, 12 November 2010 (GMT)

Cleaning Up the Contraptions?

I've been looking over some of the contraptions and many of the pages are cluttered with an alarming amount of crap. Don't get me wrong, when I first got Gmod a lot of these tutorials were priceless, but now there are just way too many 2 second contraptions on here. "Put hoverballs on a blast door", "Create a long object and leave it there. Then spawn a wheel (tractor wheel) and easy weld the object to it. Place this at a spawn area. (duplicate to cover entire area. Turn them on. watch as people constantly die and respawn. Jump in and join the fun! ^^", and "invisible fast zombies"? --Kody 22:55, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Completely agreed! The thing is most people involved in the wiki are working on the lua scripting part of it, so the rest is pretty lacking (except for wiremod, but it's a mess too). The problem is that there is a lot of these, most of which follow no template. Like you say most of them are 2 second pages that say spawn this, and weld it. Maybe we should have 'construction tips' instead like... Either way yes, much to be done here. --Crazy Quebecer 23:00, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Exactly. In my opinion about 60% of the contraptions here simply need to be deleted. The only problem is picking out which ones are actually thoughtful and helpful and which ones were just uploaded for the heck of it. Also I'm new to the wiki so I might be wrong, but I don't think many people will like other people simply erasing their work, no matter how...useless(?) it is. So how would we go about cleaning this mess? --Kody 01:45, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Well I'm gunna think about how it can be, from what I can see the vast majority can go because nothing significant can be made by them. My start suggestions would be to make some form of Garrysmod.com newpost on behalf of us all telling people who created one if they wanna keep them get them and remove them then any left over that we think are good we take off, remove all of them and catergories. Then we should think about a template for the initial thing you make, then like a template for a stage so maybe template:stage 1 stage 2 3 etc and then devise some catergories for things to fit in for example Air, Water, Land, Space etc... That would be my plan --Effektiv 21:59, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
About that note of yours Effectiv, the intention might be good but you can't just demand people stop contributing to the wiki (If we did that king of thing the whole wiki would be locked down). Also I hope you don't plan on just deleting all of that. That's just not going to happen. There actually are good ones in there and they should be brought forth. What we can do for now is re-organize the section.. but that I don't really know how. The first major problem is that the tutorials in there are tricky to navigate, maybe by creating classifying them or creating sub-sub sections but that could end up being even messier. --Crazy Quebecer 02:07, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
1) If people keep posting new contraptions while were filtering through them then there going to get missed and delete anyway so would be pointless.
2)The same as what I suggested... --Effektiv 16:59, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
There's no risk of contraptions getting "missed and deleted" ;). See the Recent changes button on the left? If there was a new entry we'd know right away. --Crazy Quebecer 17:50, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
But you wouldn't be reading the recent changes page if you were reading through a spreadsheet that had each one listed with a relevance/quality and use ratting... I've also started a new front page, for testing purposes i've took a copy of the origional layout...

Wire Addon

I added the Wire Addon section, this is a really useful mod that can make awesome contraptions so its place is suitable here, if you feel it isn't feel free to move it. And if someone can make a better icon *cough*Yarin*cough* then by all means, go ahead because the one I made took me two minutes...:p --Gilly 54 10:07, 2 February 2007 (GMT Standard Time)

Life Support

I suggest a section for Shanjaq's Life Support (see the FPS Lua section), and for it's use in submarines and space travel (see spacebuild)—The preceding unsigned comment was added by TommyGun (talkcontribs) 20:51, 15 March 2007 (UTC). Sign your posts!

Changed contraption template

I've changed the contraption template so that it has a heading level 2 at the top. I've also removed the manually added headings that where in a few different articles. This should hopefully make the menu in each section much more useful now as well as making things neater.

Adding "Modification" sub-menu

I've added a modification sub-menu to all relevant contraptions in "Experimental Contraptions". This sub-menu replaces the customise/things to add/possible improvements/etc sub-menus. It's just designed as a place to put extra ideas on how a person could improve or customise a contraption without writing down the steps required to perform the customisations.

The modification sub-menu doesn't add anything extra it's just designed to make the contraption section of the wiki have a slightly more consistent look to it. I'm more then happy to use a different name as well (I was considering customizations as well).

Just mentioning it here on the talk page before I apply it to all the contraption categories in case somebody has an objection to it.

--Danmal 18:47, 5 August 2008 (GMT-6)

I've decided on "Customization" instead of Modification and as nobody has any apparent objections I'll start applying them to all the articles.
