While Garry's Mod is a great sandbox game with limitless potential, it can be dodgy at times and should not be considered the perfect tool. Garry's Mod pulls a lot out of the Source Engine, sometimes more than it can handle or was ever meant to do. This can lead to unexpected behavior and crashing. Due to Garry's Mod's sandboxy nature it is not uncommon to encounter massive RAM-usage. Even though the game can be run with reasonably weak video cards, at least 1GB of RAM is advised because of the vast amount of calculations that need to be run per second when the game is running. Freeze-ups and slow load times are generally considered usual in the Gmod community. Following are a few words of advise to try and avoid as much unpleasantness as possible.

Garry's Mod requires a good computer

Garry's Mod is beast on CPU, RAM usage and others. Make sure you have enough to meet the minimum requirements of the game, using intergrated graphics is also a very bad idea

Old drivers often cause errors

If you haven't done so for a few years, consider upgrading your hardware so you may play the game more smoothly. Remember that Garry's Mod does not require the best of the best. For good input on what you should equip yourself with, try paying a visit to the Garry's Mod forums, although ATi and NVIDIA card users can upgrade their driver at their manufacturer's website. Play carefully

When playing Garry's Mod, try to avoid doing anything that may encourage the game to crash. This includes mass prop-spamming, NPC-spamming or any other kind of spamming, removing parents from parented props and others. Try not to be a Mingebag, on your server or others!

Some addons aren't as good as they seem they are

Garry's Mod has a huge modding community. Though many of these mods and addons make great additions to your gameplay experience, their reliability depends entirely on their creators. If you're experiencing odd behavior while playing Garry's Mod (more crashing than usual, missing elements, console error spams...) and have recently installed one or more mods/addons then consider the possibility they are causing the issue. Try removing any new addons one by one to see if the problem persists. If one of them is causing problems, contact the author and inform him/her about the problems his/her mod may be giving. Remember to give as much information as possible regarding the problem, help yourself by helping others!

Too many addons can make your load time longer

If you download too many addons, your load time will be considerably longer, so be careful.

Don't trust every addon

In Garry's Mod 9.x it was possible for people to make Lua viruses which were sent to the client when they joined an infected server. This is still possible in Garry's Mod 10, though instead of infecting from the server, they infect using fake addons. Take caution to what addons you download. Try to download addons with screenshots, a lot of downloads and positive feedback from other players, though this is not a requirement.

If you think you're infected, delete your garrysmod/garrysmod/addons folder and your garrysmod/garrysmod/lua/autorun folder.

Notes

Before upgrading your drivers, make sure you understand what model it is, etc. Before downloading. When in doubt, do as mentioned before and visit the Garry's Mod forums. Updating your drivers can cut down on crashes and BSOD's.
