Maps

Maps are so called levels, the areas where you play in the game. There are three different types of map: Official, Custom & GameMode.

Official Maps

Many games include "Official maps", that are the maps that are put in the game by the creators. This means that no one, expect the creators, can create official maps. So, if you were Garry, you'd be able to make a map, update Garry's Mod and that would be an OFFICIAL map, effectively, it is the maps that are packaged with the game.

Custom Maps

User-Made maps, the ones that aren't official. These can be created by anybody that wishes to make one. The maps will then be uploaded to garrysmod.org [1] or other hosts, so that people can download them and use them.

GameMode Maps

Garry's Mod includes so called Gamemodes. These are different coded gamestyles, that in most cases include their own maps too. These maps normally have some kind of special "entities", and sometimes they may not look so good, because the Gamemode doesn't need good looking maps. In Gmod, there are official gamemode maps, and people can make unofficials too.

Hammer Editor

Hammer (The source version of Worldcraft) is a map making tool by Valve for Source Engine map creation. The program is free if you own any Source engine game, and can be accessed through the Source SDK.
