Minigames

Minigames are games that can be made in Garry's mod with the simple tools provided, or easily downloadable STOOLS, that don't require any massive LUA gamemodes to run. Things that you can stack up, rebuild, and have a good ole' time.

Track
Cars

A great game to play is RC Races. This can be made in any way you like, be original. But I will talk about mine here.

Creation

An RC track is made up of 2 walls, inner and outer, 3 or more cars, and control panels for each player.

The walls can be made of either props, which can lag if the track is big, or ropes. Ropes are by far the easiest way to make the track but can make playing frustrating when you go outside of the track and lose your car. Then an admin has to go and retrieve it. So mass duplication of props for walls is suggested. Also, keep in mind that you will want a camera looking down from above, so don't make it gigantically big. Making the cars is the most fun part. I have an example car here but you can make any kind you wish. Just make sure they drive nice and don't have a tendency to tip. I used locker doors for mine. Also note that if you make more then 3 cars that you have a second player, for he needs to use his keypad for the remaining thrusters.

Before we start the control panels, enable noclip (press V by default or type "noclip" in the console) and fly high above the track. Then place an RT camera. Back on the ground spawn a prop and apply the RT material to it. You have a live view of the track! My most recommended prop for this is in the Useful Construction Props section, at the very bottom, there is a wall of wood. This is great to use. The buttons can be placed on any surface or prop as long as you make sure the buttons line up the cars. Hint, although this is up to you, make the forward and reverse thrusters toggles. This makes it easier to race.

That's it, enjoy and happy racing.

Dog Racing

You should visit this page before trying to dog race; it will show you how to make and use a "dog". The idea of this minigame is simple: race dogs. Speed is obtained by fine tuning your dogs movements, so it will depend on the skill you have in making one. Some people love this and some people don't, so if you plan on doing this you should make a dog and show it around. If people like it, you could probably set a race up.

Introduction

A game where you and as many other people as you want can crash into one another trying to destroy each others' defenses made out of wooden crates, explosive barrels, gasoline tanks etc. This type of game works best on a flat land area, such as the gm_flatgrass map.

Making the car

Spawn a working jeep for every contestant in the game. Now, spawn many breakable props such as wooden crates, explosive barrels etc. and Easy Weld them to your jeep. Try to get as many crates and barrels on your jeep as you possibly can. Color every vehicle a different color so you can easily distinguish between them. A good tip is to spawn lamps with your car color on in front as headlights. The first one with all their crates or barrels destroyed is out of the game. The rest of the players continue until only one is left standing.

Playing the game

All contestants drive as far away from each other as possible. When everyone is ready, you can start the race in the chat section. Every car drives as fast as they can towards each other to destroy their defense of crates and explosive barrels (Use thrusters if allowed). Now this is the fun part: when 5-6 cars are stuck in a group trying to get attack eachother and a 7th person comes crashing in from behind so all of the explosive barrels explode, making 90 percent of the players die and wooden pieces go flying sky high.

Rules you might want to use

  1. Allow/Not Allow thrusters
  2. Allow/Not Allow Explosive Barrels
  3. Allow/Not Allow using Metal Props on the jeep (making it impossible to destroy the jeep)
  4. Allow/Not Allow Invisibility (Transparent - Alpha)
  5. Allow/Not Allow Hover Balls (Giving a player an unfair advantage; for example, flying away when there is trouble)

Conclusion

Try making up your own rules and maybe your own game style to have the most fun.

Good Luck, and Good Crashing!

Robot War

Minigames: Robot War
Page white text.png Description:War with robots?

Calendar.png Created:January 31, 2007
Page white text.png Notes:-

Intro

Create a robot, car, or anything you control without the physgun. Then you can add a box, or something breakable onto it by Welding it. The player who breaks his breakable item loses and has to stay at spawn for the rest of the game. One other way to have this war is to just simply try to tip the other one over.

Rules

  1. NO INVISIBLE ROBOTS

Tipping mode:

  1. Players attempt to flip other robots onto their backs, making them useless.

Boxmode:

  1. The other players have to be able to hit it and see it.

The rules can be different. Here are some examples:

  1. Allowing cannons/turrets
  2. Allowing hoverballs
  3. Allowing harpoons (to shoot and drag robots)
  4. Allowing thrusters

Pretty much like the Derby Jeep War.

Hints

If you play tipping mode, then you should try not to use hoverballs, and have a big or heavy robot.

If you play with boxmode then you could try to have something welded on the robot. Make sure the other players still can hit it, just make it a bit harder.

Rollermine handball/soccer

Intro

This is basically a soccer/handball-similar game. The main difference is that a rollermine is used in place of a ball!

Setup

  1. Spawn something to serve as a net, a cargo crate is good because it's large. This makes it easy to tell if there was a goal.
  2. Repeat step 1 on the other side of the 'field'
  3. Spawn a rollermine. Immediately pick it up with the gravity gun.
  4. People line up on either side.
  5. Person with rollermine goes to center and fires straight up to start the game.

Constructing

Firstly , you'll need some kind of a court. It'd be best to use gm_construct and use the area near the spawn point and garage. Or you could use the large spawn area on gm_flatgrass. It's ultimately up to you. Spawn two dock poles (medium size) a good distance apart from each other (think volleyball net) and rope them together. Make a roof out of something (blast doors, wooden pallets, doesn't matter) to stop the ball flying off. Finally, draw an outline of the playing area with the rope tool - make sure it's a decent size. You now have a court.

Rules

  1. You are only allowed to use Grav Guns
  2. You are not allowed to shoot the Rollermine
  3. You are not allowed to injure another player
  4. Stay on your side of the court

Gameplay

One person should grab the rollermine with his Grav Gun. He should then launch it over the net. The other team should catch it. If the ball hits the ground the other team gains a point. If a person on either team is injured by the ball, the other team gains a point. It's fairly simple to grasp, and it really quite fun! Enjoy! (Pictures to come soon)

Fortwars!

Why this is different from Sourceforts

When you play sourceforts or a similar "fort-building" mod, the objective is to make an indestructible fort that hinders all enemy movement. The point of this game is not to hinder movement, as in a capture the flag game, but to make an interesting and effective fortress.

How to Play

  1. Players take a preset amount of time (I would recommend around 10 minutes) to design their fort.
  2. The forts *must* include so-called "softpoints" that can be destroyed - crates are good, or pallets, or just about anything.
  3. Both teams agree on a set number of softpoints to include in their forts. Once placed, these should be painted a distinctive color, like purple or orange. If you want, you could identify yourself and your team by that color, just for kicks. You could even paint yourselves that color with the color gun.
  4. The object of the game is to destroy your opponents' softpoints *without* using standard weapons. Have fun, be creative! Create a catapult and fling barrels, or create some of the objects in the war machines section of this wiki and integrate them. Turrets are cheap.
  5. Softpoints *must* be in plain view from outside of the fort. Whoever destroys the other team's softpoints first is declared the winrar!

Notes

I have made a Wire version with Expression2, but I won't post it here. I'll be posting it on Facepunch when it gets fixed. The Wiki's Contraptions section seems to be simple stuff, so I'll make a non-Wire version.

What You Need

  1. Slider Tool
  2. Easy Weld Tool
  3. Stacker STool
  4. Thrusters
  5. A camera (optionally)
  6. A bunch of (non-explosive!) barrels

How To Do It

  1. First, spawn a barrel.
  2. Now take the Stacker STool and stack the barrel 1 up. Make sure the Freeze, Weld, and NoCollide boxes are checked.
  3. Spawn another barrel, and Easy Weld it to the side of the top barrel.
  4. Put two barrels, in the same fashion, on the other side of the barrel you just Easy Welded. Easiest way to go would be Easy Weld a barrel onto the middle one, then stack 1 up or down (depending on the ghost's direction)
  5. Easy Weld a barrel on top of the middle.
  6. Hit that barrel with the stacker tool. 5 more should do it. Again, up or down depends on the direction of the ghost.
  7. This is the legs, torso, and head of the robot. Make the arms how you want. Branch them from the second or third barrel from the top.
  8. Now, the barrel you want to punch needs to be done a certain way. Easy Weld it onto the part it attaches to. Then, grab it with your physgun, freeze it, and undo the weld you just made. Move the barrel slightly away from the rest, and take out your Slider Tool.
  9. Right click the center of the end of the barrel. This will be the mechanism that punches.
  10. On the exact same spot (Smart Snap, if you have it, is awesome for this), place your Thruster. It should have a force of about 75000 (for quick punches).
  11. Repeat steps 8-10 for the other arm's punching barrel, use different thruster buttons.
  12. If you want to add the camera, take your Camera Tool, and shoot it at the back of your robot's head (while noclipped up). Make it toggle.

There is your Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robot. Have your friend duplicate it, tell him the numpad controls, and you're gonna have a FIGHT, boy!

Notes

This game requires at least one person who as access to no-clip and be able to spawn NPCs and weapons.

What You Need

You need a map like gm_construct, where it's open in the middle but there are buildings players can hide in. If you are on a map that does not have that, have players build a base. The base must have at least one opening.

How to Play

  1. Get players into the building or base and build a large wall the admin can spawn different NPCs behind them without showing what he's spawning and keeping the enemies knowing of the player's existence.
  2. Spawn enemy NPCs, occasionally spawning friendly NPCs every few rounds to help the players.
  3. Each wave, make units more difficult. (Example: CP with pistol -> CP with Smg -> Combine Soldier with SMG -> Combine Soldier with Shotgun -> Etc.)
  4. After you've spawned the baddies, remove the wall and watch the people fight the NPCs.
  5. After the wave has ended, give players at least 30 seconds to regroup and reload. Continue steps 1-3.
  6. Continue until all players are dead.

Rules

  1. Players must build a base that is penetrable.
  2. Players are not allowed to spawn friendly NPCs or weapons.
  3. Players who die must move out of the battlefield.
  4. NPC spawner must slowly raise difficulty. Spawning Striders first round is frowned upon.

Turret Trouble

creation

  1. select a map with a battle-field type structure. (gm_mobenix or excess construct are good maps)
  2. ensure that many many turrets are placed in varios areas through the battle area.
  3. if you have model manipulator and portal, switch all turrets models to the portal turret. this gives a sense of where the things are looking.

rules

  1. ONLY USE THE GRAVGUN!
  2. players are automatically disqualified if they leave the battle area.
  3. if you get killed by a turret, you must no-clip back to where you got killed. (optional, this is for fun.)

how to play

basically, just use your gravgun until you rid the battleground of turrets. have fun!
